Odyssey
The Odyssey is Roatán's big wreck — a cargo ship of roughly 90 meters that ranks among the larger intentional sinkings in the western Caribbean. She ended her working life ignominiously, damaged by fire while laid up at French Harbour, and rather than let the hulk rot at the dock, island operators and owners arranged her cleaning and scuttling in 2002 off the north shore near Mud Hole, a short run from West End's dive fleet. She settled on sand against the base of the reef slope in the low thirties of meters, upright, her tall bow and stern sections dominating a site that takes several dives to know. Being younger and larger than her neighbor El Aguila, she offers a different flavor: long steel corridors of hull to glide along, kingposts rising toward the light, and holds that have become fish shelters — silversides in season, tarpon in the shadows, grouper below. Sponges and whip corals are claiming the steel steadily. Roatán's typically calm, clear north-shore water makes her an unusually comfortable dive for her size.
Deliberately scuttled as an artificial reef on Roatán's north shore, 2002.
Upright and largely intact, with storm wear beginning to open lighter structures
Limited. Large openings allow swim-throughs of the holds and upper structure; deeper machinery spaces are dark and for trained wreck divers only.
Advanced Open Water
Silversides pack the holds in summer, tarpon and grouper hold in the shade, barracuda hang off the masts, and sponges and gorgonians thicken every year
Depth at the sand and disorientation inside the larger holds
