The Maldives is an ocean nation in the purest sense: 26 atolls of rings and lagoons scattered across 800 kilometers of Indian Ocean, with no point of land more than a few meters high. The diving works on current. Channels between the open sea and the lagoons act as feeding funnels where gray reef sharks hold station, eagle rays stack in formation, and divers hook into the reef edge to watch the parade. Mantas are a national specialty, from cleaning stations in the central atolls to Hanifaru Bay's famous plankton-driven feeding frenzies, and whale sharks patrol South Ari year-round. The North and South Malé Atolls hold the classic channel dives, wrecks, and the densest resort and liveaboard traffic within reach of the capital. Baa Atoll and Hanifaru Bay form the UNESCO biosphere reserve where southwest-monsoon plankton pulses pull dozens of mantas, and occasionally whale sharks, into a single bay, managed as a snorkel-only encounter.
