Aliwal Shoal & Umkomaas
Aliwal Shoal, a fossilized dune reef five kilometers off Umkomaas south of Durban, is South Africa's shark headquarters. Ragged-tooth sharks pack its caves and gullies through the austral winter, tiger sharks patrol the baited dives of summer, and two 19th- and 20th-century wrecks — the Nebo and the Produce — lie within reach. Surf launches, surge, and swell make it a proper ocean venue rather than a resort reef.

Few places let you watch big sharks behave naturally at recreational depths in such variety. From June to November, ragged-tooth sharks (sand tigers) gather on the shoal to mate, stacking up in amphitheaters like Raggie Cave and Cathedral — slow, heavy-bodied animals that tolerate calm divers at close range. Summer flips the cast: baited dives in open water bring in oceanic blacktips by the dozen and, on the right days, tiger sharks of three meters and more. The shoal itself is sculpted sandstone — ledges, pinnacles, and swim-throughs holding rays, morays, harlequin shrimp-sized macro, and clouds of goldies — and the wrecks add history: the Nebo, sunk in 1884, and the Produce, lost in 1974, both busy with fish life. Conditions are honest Indian Ocean: launches through the surf zone, current, and visibility that swings with rain and swell. When it lines up, there is nothing else like it on the continent's east coast.

Hoe kom je er & verblijf
Hoe kom je er: Umkomaas is about 45 minutes' drive south of Durban's airport; boats launch from the Mkomazi river mouth or the beach and reach the shoal in 15-25 minutes.
Waar verblijven: Umkomaas and neighboring Scottburgh are small dive towns — guesthouses, B&Bs, and dive-lodge packages rather than resorts.
Kosten: Standard reef and wreck dives are good value; baited shark dives run as premium single-tank trips. MPA permit fees are collected by operators.
Tussen de duiken door: Durban's beachfront and curry culture, the Sardine Run in June-July, golf, and day trips to the Drakensberg foothills.
Snorkelen: Operators run surface programs with the blacktips on calm days, but this coast is fundamentally a diving venue.
Veiligheid & praktische zaken
Gevaren: Surf-zone boat launches, surge and current over the shoal, changeable visibility, and open-water drifts on baited dives — this is not a calm-lagoon destination.
Follow launch drills exactly, keep hands off all sharks, and treat baited dives as choreographed wildlife encounters run to strict operator protocols. An SMB and decent fitness are effectively mandatory.
