Japanese Gardens

The name promises ornamental order, and the reef delivers: terraces of hard coral descend from wading depth in arranged-looking tiers, punctuated by soft-coral bushes and clouds of anthias that catch the Gulf of Aqaba's unusually still light. This is the marine reserve's showcase for what the northern gulf grows naturally - no sunken machines, no gimmicks, just dense, healthy coral cover at every depth a diver could want. Clownfish colonies dot the mid-slope, green turtles graze through most weeks, and garden eels fringe the sand where the terraces run out. It is Aqaba's default first dive, its most popular snorkel, and the site instructors use to convince skeptics that Jordan's short coastline is not a compromise.
