At the quiet northern end of the marked shore sites, Karpata pairs Bonaire's best visibility with its most sculptural reef. The terrace breaks into buttresses and sand gullies before tipping down a slope that fades into indigo, and centuries-old anchors lie fused into the coral, relics of the plantation-era anchorage that named the site. Turtles are near-guaranteed along the drop, and the upper reef's elkhorn and fire coral gardens glow in afternoon light. Divers who make the short drive past the oil terminal find fewer trucks and calmer water than the southern classics.
