Browning Wall is the exhibit A of cold-water diving's case: a vertical face in Browning Pass near Port Hardy on which no bare rock is visible - not a patch. White and orange plumose anemones stack like snowdrifts, interrupted by crimson soft corals, sponges, basket stars, and nudibranchs in absurd variety, with rockfish hanging in the water column as if hung on wires. Wolf eels and giant Pacific octopuses den in the crevices at the wall's foot. Slack-tide timing is absolute; the flood that feeds this much filter-feeding life takes no passengers. In winter visibility, drifting slowly along the wall feels like flying past a painted cliff.
바로 그 순간: Total invertebrate cover, winter 20 m-plus visibility, dens of octopus and wolf eels
지형: Sheer rock wall in Browning Pass, invertebrate cover total from surface to depth
조류: Dived on slack tide; the current that feeds the wall would otherwise sweep divers off it.
입수 전에 알아두세요
위험 요소: Tidal current outside slack windows, cold water demanding drysuit competence.
보존: Fragile filter-feeder cover - a misplaced fin removes years of growth; local operators brief buoyancy hard.
