Painted Walls

Off the southern tip of Dead Chest, the island where legend parks Blackbeard's marooned pirates, a set of long parallel canyons cuts toward shore, and their inner faces explain the name: every vertical inch is grouted with encrusting sponge in reds, oranges, and violets, laid on like paint over the rock. Divers file through the corridors as light shafts swing across the color, finding lobsters and banded coral shrimp in the seams and glassy sweepers in the darker recesses. It is a shallow dive that photographs like a deep one, and the swell that feeds the sponges asks for steady buoyancy in the passages.
