Depth is the range from the top of the site to its usual maximum; "recommended cert" is the mainstream-agency level operators usually ask for, not a legal rule. Currents and visibility change daily — treat everything here as planning ranges.

Granito de Oro is a speck of an islet - one beach, a few palms - ringed by the busiest shallow reef in Coiba National Park. Whitetip reef sharks are the residents: they stack under ledges and cruise the sand channels in a density that turns first-time shark watchers into converts within minutes, all in less than 15 m of water. Hawksbill and green turtles graze the coral heads, eagle rays flap past the drop, and frogfish squat among the sponges for guides with sharp eyes. Snorkelers work the same reef from above. Rangers limit landings on the islet itself; the reef, mercifully, absorbs its visitors without showing it.

The moment you come for: Whitetips by the dozen in the shallows, turtles at close range, a reef that works for every level

Topography: Coral heads and boulders skirting a postcard islet, sand between

Current: Current wraps the islet's corners on bigger tides; the lee side stays gentle.

Know before you splash

Hazards: Current at the corners, boat traffic on busy mornings.

Permits & rules: Park entry fee applies, arranged through operators.

Conservation: Core zone of Coiba National Park; landings and visitor numbers on the islet are ranger-controlled.
