The Big Scare is Costa Rica's most honest adrenaline dive: no cage, no bait, just bull sharks on their own terms. Divers descend quickly to the sand at 25-30 m off the Bat Islands, settle low with hands folded, and wait while heavy females - some visibly pregnant in season - materialize out of the green-blue and make deliberate, unhurried passes, sometimes close enough to count scars. Guides run the protocol strictly: grouped divers, no reaching, controlled ascents. Between shark passes, devil rays and eagle rays work overhead and big cubera snapper loiter. The season runs roughly May to November, when seas allow the long run north from Playas del Coco.
