The Islands
The Islands is Dahab's coral cathedral quarter: towers of porites and branching acropora grown so tall and close that the dive becomes a route through canyons and courtyards rather than along a reef line. Guides navigate a circuit of sand-floored amphitheaters - one nicknamed the swimming pool for its bright, enclosed calm - linked by passages that open suddenly onto the next chamber. Fish life is domestic rather than dramatic: anemonefish colonies, parrotfish working the walls, the odd turtle wedged in for a rest. What stays with divers is the architecture, some of the healthiest shallow hard coral on this coast, best photographed in the low gold of late afternoon. Navigation is genuinely confusing without a guide, which keeps the maze feeling private.
Het moment waar je voor komt: Hard-coral architecture unmatched on this coast; enclosed sand amphitheaters; superb late-light photography.
Topografie: A labyrinth of hard-coral towers, sand amphitheaters, and connecting passages
Instap: South of town near the lagoon; a marked channel threads the reef flat into the coral maze.
Weet dit voordat je het water in gaat
Gevaren: Easy to lose orientation inside the maze; shallow coral close on every side.
Behoud: The maze funnels every diver along the same corridors - fin control protects coral that cannot be replaced at this density.
