The C-58 is the Cancun area's adrenaline wreck. Storms have torn the old minesweeper into pieces on the sand, and the gap between sections funnels current like a wind tunnel — you grip the briefing as much as the wreck. That same flow makes it a magnet: in winter, squadrons of spotted eagle rays hold formation off the hull, sometimes dozens strong, one of the Mexican Caribbean's most reliable ray spectacles. Big green morays and nurse sharks lodge in the machinery spaces, and schools of porkfish smoke around the debris. Short, deep, fast, and worth planning a trip around in ray season.
Winter eagle-ray squadrons, broken-hull swim-bys, big morays, honest current diving.
A mid-century ex-US Navy minesweeper that served Mexico, scuttled as an artificial reef and later broken into sections by hurricane seas.
This is a current dive most days — part of why the fish life is so rich.
Open-water descent, often negative entry when the current runs; dived from both Cancun and Isla Mujeres.
Strong current, sharp broken steel, and depth; carry a surface marker and reel.
Artificial reef; penetration of the broken sections is unstable and discouraged.
