Vanessa's Reef

Vanessa's is Kimbe's gallery of fans — gorgonians the size of dining tables tiered along a slope, with soft corals filling the gaps and anemone after anemone staked out by combative clownfish. The scale of the sea fans gives wide-angle shooters their frames, but the site's second life is small: pygmy seahorses on selected fans, whip-coral gobies, and nudibranchs that guides here find with unsettling ease. Sheltered inside the bay, it rarely sees current worth naming, so it suits long, slow profiles and repeat visits. It is the kind of reef that rewards a diver who moves ten meters in ten minutes.
