The name is literal: two natural lava steps make a staircase into some of the most reliable shore-diving water in Hawaiʻi. The coral here is among the Kona coast's healthiest — cauliflower and lobe corals shingling down the slope — and the residents cycle through all day: yellow tang rivers, parrotfish, turtles heading for the surface in slow spirals, spinner dolphins some mornings out over the sand channel.
