The Monster's Shoal is named for what lives below it: smalltooth sand tigers (Odontaspis ferox), a deep-water shark divers essentially never meet, which researchers and a lucky handful of very deep divers have documented at Malpelo. Encounters happen well below recreational limits and are rare events even for the prepared - this atlas records the site's fame without promising the shark. At diveable depths the bank still justifies the trip out: hammerheads and Galapagos sharks working a cold, current-swept plateau at the edge of visibility. It is a dive for disciplined teams with deep training, redundant gas, and modest expectations - and it is unforgettable when the monster shows.
