The Spar spent a working life tending buoys and breaking ice for the Coast Guard - she was among the cutters that circumnavigated North America via the Northwest Passage in 1957 - before being sunk as an artificial reef off Morehead City in 2004. She sits upright and compact, small enough to tour thoroughly in one dive: deckhouse, mast, and open holds, all claimed within a few seasons by the local cast. Sand tigers now hang in her lee and drift along the rails, often in company with the schools of spadefish and amberjack that use her as a mid-ocean landmark. For divers building offshore experience, she is the friendliest of the Crystal Coast's shark wrecks.
