Advanced Open Water; nitrox strongly recommended

Depth is the range from the top of the site to its usual maximum; "recommended cert" is the mainstream-agency level operators usually ask for, not a legal rule. Currents and visibility change daily — treat everything here as planning ranges.

On 9 May 1942 the Coast Guard cutter Icarus depth-charged U-352 to the bottom off Morehead City; accounts put her dead at 13 to 15, and the 33 survivors became some of the first German prisoners taken by US forces in the war. The submarine lies listing on clean sand at around 35 m, conning tower recognizable, pressure hull exposed where the outer plating has gone - an unmistakable silhouette that no artificial reef can imitate. She is a war grave in practice and dived as one: look, photograph, take nothing, enter nothing. Amberjack spiral the tower, sand tigers drift past in summer, and the blue Gulf Stream water completes a dive of real historical weight.

The moment you come for: An authentic U-boat casualty of the Battle of the Atlantic, often in blue 25 m visibility

Topography: Type VIIC U-boat listing to starboard on sand, hull largely intact

Current: Gulf Stream influence brings blue water and flow in varying doses; descend the anchor line.

This site is a charted wreck U-352 — German Type VIIC U-boat, sunk 1942. It is treated as a war grave: dive with respect, disturb nothing. Full wreck history and dive guide →

Know before you splash

Hazards: Depth with short no-deco times, current, occasional low-vis days inshore of the Stream.

Conservation: Treat as a war grave: no penetration, no artifact removal - the site has lost too much to takers already.

Nitrox: Worth it here — profiles sit in the range where enriched air meaningfully extends no-stop time (with the training to use it).
