U-352

On 9 May 1942 the Coast Guard cutter Icarus depth-charged U-352 to the bottom off Morehead City; accounts put her dead at 13 to 15, and the 33 survivors became some of the first German prisoners taken by US forces in the war. The submarine lies listing on clean sand at around 35 m, conning tower recognizable, pressure hull exposed where the outer plating has gone - an unmistakable silhouette that no artificial reef can imitate. She is a war grave in practice and dived as one: look, photograph, take nothing, enter nothing. Amberjack spiral the tower, sand tigers drift past in summer, and the blue Gulf Stream water completes a dive of real historical weight.
