Depth is the range from the top of the site to its usual maximum; "recommended cert" is the mainstream-agency level operators usually ask for, not a legal rule. Currents and visibility change daily — treat everything here as planning ranges.

Giant's Castle is Tofo's deep den — a long ridge in the 21-to-33-meter band where the coast's heavyweight animals are most reliably met. Smalleye stingrays, among the largest whiptail rays in the ocean and seen here more often than nearly anywhere, cruise the sand line; mantas track the ridge on passage between stations; loggerhead turtles and big morays hold the ledges. Winter dives run to a soundtrack of humpback song. Bottom time is short, the water is often green with the plankton that feeds the megafauna, and encounters obey no schedule — the standard Tofo bargain, at its deepest.

The moment you come for: Smalleye stingray territory; deep-passage mantas; humpback song in winter

Topography: Deep reef ridge with ledges and drop-offs over sand at 30-plus meters

Current: Deep and exposed; drift-style diving when the along-shore current runs.

Know before you splash

Hazards: Depth is the defining hazard; watch no-deco time and gas from the first minute.

Conservation: Ray and manta identification shots (ventral patterns) are welcomed by local researchers — taken from distance, without flash barrages.

Nitrox: Worth it here — profiles sit in the range where enriched air meaningfully extends no-stop time (with the training to use it).
