Mariner's Cave
Depth is the range from the top of the site to its usual maximum; "recommended cert" is the mainstream-agency level operators usually ask for, not a legal rule. Currents and visibility change daily, so treat everything here as planning ranges.
Mariner's Cave hides completely from the surface: the only door is an underwater notch in a cliff, a short committed swim that opens into a dark chamber where you surface inside the island. The magic is atmospheric in the literal sense: swell compresses and releases the trapped air, so the chamber fogs and clears every few seconds, a cloud appearing and vanishing around your head. Tongan legend populates the cave with a hidden princess, and guides tell it well. Entry demands honest self-assessment as a breath-hold swim, though divers on tanks slip in easily. Claustrophobes are excused without shame.
The moment you come for: The vanishing-fog breathing of the chamber; surfacing in sealed darkness inside a cliff; a legend worth hearing on the boat ride.
Topography: A submerged tunnel opening into a sealed chamber with an internal air pocket above the water
Entry: The entrance lies about a meter below the surface on Nuapapu Island's cliff face; swimmers duck-dive and swim a few meters of submerged tunnel into the air-filled chamber.
Know before you splash
Hazards: The breath-hold entry in any swell is a real commitment; no air until the chamber; go only with guides who read the conditions.
Conservation: A site of Tongan story and pride: enter with a local guide, and leave the chamber's stillness the way you found it.
