The Zoo

The Zoo is Wakatobi's critter enclosure, named for the sheer variety a single unhurried circuit can produce. The slope's mix of soft-coral thickets, sponges, and sandy breaks stacks habitats close together, so guides move a few meters and change ecosystems: leaf scorpionfish in two or three colors, ornate ghost pipefish beside crinoids, frogfish sulking on sponges, cockatoo waspfish rocking in the surge like drifting leaves. Pipefish and shrimp-goby pairs work the sand, and nudibranchs are almost punctuation. Nothing about the dive is demanding, currents are soft and depths modest, which leaves full attention for the search. Photographers routinely rate it the best macro site on the Tomia roster.
