Elephant Ear Canyon

A river of white sand pours through a cut in West Caicos's wall, and partway down the canyon grows the site's namesake: an orange elephant ear sponge broad enough to shade a diver, one of the largest most visitors will ever see. The wall on either side is classic West Caicos, deeply fissured and hung with rope sponges, while the sand channel below traffics stingrays and the odd passing reef shark. Photographers budget half their dive for the sponge alone, framing buddies against it, then ride the canyon rim back to the shallows where garden eels colonize the flats.
