Batu Kapal

Batu Kapal, the Ship Rock, is a stone hull anchored permanently off the Bandas, its underwater architecture bigger than its surface hints. Submerged pinnacles cluster around the islet, and the channels between them funnel clouds of fusiliers and redtooth triggerfish so thick they behave like weather. Dogtooth tuna and Spanish mackerel patrol the perimeter, grey reef sharks make passes at depth, and the buttresses wear fans and black coral in the clear Banda blue. Guides work a circuit between pinnacles, choosing sides by the current. It is a classic crossing-season dive, big scenery, big fish, honest exposure, and one of the sites hammerhead-watchers check hopefully on every visit.
