Molasses is the workhorse of Key Largo diving and arguably the most-visited reef in the hemisphere, which says something about how much life it still carries. Spur-and-groove coral ridges run seaward in orderly ranks, each groove a sand boulevard trafficked by southern stingrays and nurse sharks, each spur topped with sea fans, grunts in curtains, and the parrotfish crunch that becomes the dive's soundtrack. Turtles pass with the indifference of long habituation, barracuda hold station under boats, and the old winch from a grounded cargo vessel marks the site's best-known corner. Mooring buoys, shallow profiles, and dependable clarity make it the Keys' default answer to almost any conditions question.
