Hairball is Lembeh muck in its purest form: an unpromising slope of black sand whose name nods to the shaggy algae clumps and to its most famous resident, the hairy frogfish. Guides read the sand like a page, turning up mimic and coconut octopus mid-performance, flamboyant cuttlefish flashing warning colors at a walking pace, snake eels periscoping, and stargazers buried to the eyeballs. After dark the site changes shifts, with Bobbit worms cocked in their burrows and hunting cephalopods under the lights. There is nothing to look at and everything to find, which is exactly the point; photographers routinely burn an entire long dive inside an area the size of a tennis court.
