Molokini Back Wall

Wrap around Molokini's rim and the friendly crater vanishes: the outside is a cliff in blue water, dropping past 60 m with nothing beneath your fins but darkening ocean. The dive is a drift along that face — black coral bushes and fans on the rock, jacks and the odd gray reef shark materializing from open water, eagle rays planing the wall, and in winter the constant creak and moan of humpbacks somewhere in the channel. There is no bottom to save a distracted diver, which is the site's entire discipline: watch the gauge, watch the group, and let the wall scroll past like landscape from a train.
