Octopus Rock

A single stack standing well offshore, Octopus Rock works like a magnet in the plankton-rich flow: everything living within kilometers seems to route past it. Divers spiral the pinnacle through terraces of whip coral and purple soft coral, ticking off honeycomb morays, resting zebra sharks on the sand apron, cuttlefish flaring at their reflections, and the reef octopus that justify the name. Nudibranch diversity here quietly rivals far more famous macro destinations, which gives the site an unusual double character - big-animal chances in the green haze above, slow-hunting macro below. When mobulas or a whale shark do appear, they tend to circle rather than pass, as curious about the stack's traffic as everyone else.
Zebra sharks on the sand apron; dense macro on a big-animal site; the spiral-circuit profile around a lone stack.
A lone rock stack over terraced boulders and sand in open water
Slack windows give the easiest circuits; a running tide turns the dive into a one-way drift past the stack.
An isolated stack in open water north of Lima, dived as a spiral circuit around the pinnacle; exposed when the tide runs.
Open-water exposure with no shelter; currents build quickly mid-tide; navigation depends on keeping the stack in sight.
