Caverna da Sapata

At the island's dramatic southwestern tip, where the cliffs of Ponta da Sapata drop straight into deep water, a broad cavern opens at the base of the wall. The dive stays honest cavern rather than cave - the exit remains visible in daylight - but the atmosphere is complete: nurse sharks resting in the gloom, lobster antennae fencing from the cracks, big-eye soldierfish stacked under the ceiling, and the blue mouth framing every diver's silhouette on the way out. Outside, the wall itself carries turtles and passing pelagics. Exposure to swell makes this a calm-season dive, briefed carefully and skipped without apology when the ocean says no.
