The Aeolus laid and repaired undersea cable for the Navy before North Carolina sank her as an artificial reef in 1988; hurricanes since have shouldered the 409-foot hull into three great sections, which improved her as habitat and as a dive. The gaps between sections form canyons of steel where sand tigers stack in the shade, and the broken decks open sight lines that intact wrecks never offer - divers drift through rooms with the roofs peeled back, escorted by amberjack and barracuda. Swim-throughs abound for those trained for them. She sits in the same blue-water zone as the Spar and Caribsea, and charter schedules pair them into the classic Morehead City double.
