Caribsea

The freighter Caribsea was torpedoed by U-158 in March 1942 off Cape Lookout; 21 of her 28 crew were lost, among them men whose hometowns faced this same coast. Her broken remains - engine, boilers, and long ridges of hull plate - have become the most reliable sand tiger shark aggregation site in North Carolina. On summer days dozens of the big, ragged-toothed sharks hover in the water column over the wreckage, motionless as parade balloons, threading between divers with sleepy indifference. Baitfish swarm so thickly they form a second surface. Dive it with the respect the loss demands: settle low, move slowly, and let the sharks and the history occupy the water together.
