Recommended cert
Advanced Open Water with deep experience; nitrox strongly recommended

Depth is the range from the top of the site to its usual maximum; "recommended cert" is the mainstream-agency level operators usually ask for, not a legal rule. Currents and visibility change daily — treat everything here as planning ranges.

The Proteus, a coastal passenger steamer, went down in 1918 after a nighttime collision while running the wartime coast, and a century underwater has reduced her to the eloquent essentials: towering engine, boilers, shafts, and a bow section rising from pale sand at 36 m. This is the deep classic of the Morehead City roster, bathed more often than not in indigo Gulf Stream water. Sand tigers patrol the machinery in numbers, joined in late summer by whatever the Stream ferries past - big amberjack, African pompano, rays, and the occasional surprise that keeps charter captains telling stories. Depth makes the visits short; the atmosphere makes them memorable.

The moment you come for: Century-old steamer bones in blue water, sand tigers over the machinery, Gulf Stream wildcards

Topography: Collapsed passenger steamer - engine, boilers, bow - standing proud of the sand

Current: Far offshore in the Gulf Stream's lane - blue water is common, so is flow.

Know before you splash

Hazards: Depth at the edge of recreational limits; current; distance offshore commits the day to the weather.

Nitrox: Worth it here — profiles sit in the range where enriched air meaningfully extends no-stop time (with the training to use it).
