Proteus

The Proteus, a coastal passenger steamer, went down in 1918 after a nighttime collision while running the wartime coast, and a century underwater has reduced her to the eloquent essentials: towering engine, boilers, shafts, and a bow section rising from pale sand at 36 m. This is the deep classic of the Morehead City roster, bathed more often than not in indigo Gulf Stream water. Sand tigers patrol the machinery in numbers, joined in late summer by whatever the Stream ferries past - big amberjack, African pompano, rays, and the occasional surprise that keeps charter captains telling stories. Depth makes the visits short; the atmosphere makes them memorable.
