Electric Beach

A power plant makes an unlikely ecotourism anchor, but the warm, clean cooling water jetting from Kahe Point's twin pipes acts like a fish magnet with a utility bill. Snapper, goatfish, and chub hold in the flow in swirling thousands; green turtles queue in the warmth; spinner dolphins loop through most mornings on their way along the leeward coast, close enough to hear. The pipes themselves, furred in growth, funnel a current divers lean into like wind. It is a short dive card (modest depth, modest coral), elevated by sheer animal traffic and the surreal industrial soundtrack humming overhead.

The moment you come for: Fish blizzards in the warm outflow; frequent spinner dolphin flybys; turtles basking in the discharge plume.

Topography: Sand and reef flat around two large cooling-water outfall pipes

Current: The outflow itself pushes hard near the pipe mouths, and longshore current runs on windy days.

Entry: Sand-channel entry opposite the Kahe power station on the leeward coast, then a surface swim out to the discharge pipes; mornings are calmest.

Hazards: The surface swim and outflow push tire weak swimmers; boat and jet-ski traffic outside the channel; entry surge on swell.

Conservation: Dolphins pass through on their own business: no chasing, no cutting off the pod; federal guidelines on approach distance apply.
