Liberty

The Liberty, a Russian-built coastal cargo ship, was cleaned and scuttled off Protaras in 2009 to give the resort coast a proper wreck, and the Mediterranean has spent the years since moving in. Groupers of increasing self-importance patrol the holds, lionfish hang inverted under the deck overhangs, and bream swirl the superstructure in bright water that flatters photographers. At under forty meters of ship she is an unhurried single-tank circuit — bow, hold, bridge, stern — with swim-through openings prepared for divers with the training to use them.
