Depth is the range from the top of the site to its usual maximum; "recommended cert" is the mainstream-agency level operators usually ask for, not a legal rule. Currents and visibility change daily — treat everything here as planning ranges.

Magic Mountain, or Shadow Reef, is Misool's marquee dive: a submerged ridge where both reef mantas and their giant oceanic cousins attend the same cleaning stations, sometimes in the same dive. Divers settle along the ridge line while mantas stack in the current overhead, and the supporting cast alone would carry a lesser site: grey reef sharks, dogtooth tuna, schooling snapper and barracuda, and walls of fusiliers being harried by trevally. The surrounding no-take zone, patrolled with help from a local conservation partnership, keeps the biomass extravagant. It is open-ocean diving with real current, and among the most consistently rewarded sites in southern Raja Ampat.

The moment you come for: Reef and oceanic mantas sharing cleaning stations; sharks and tuna on the ridge; Misool's no-take biomass.

Topography: Submerged coral ridge in open water off southeast Misool, rising to about 6 m at its shallowest.

Current: Exposed submerged ridge; current sets the choreography and can switch mid-dive.

Know before you splash

Hazards: Strong current on an open seamount, blue-water ascents, and distance from any help; liveaboard-standard procedures apply.

Conservation: Lies within Misool's marine reserve; ranger patrols funded by tourism have measurably rebuilt fish and shark numbers here.

Nitrox: Worth it here — profiles sit in the range where enriched air meaningfully extends no-stop time (with the training to use it).
