Drop Off

The Drop Off is Sipadan's thesis statement: you wade off a beach, and the bottom is 600 m away. The wall falls sheer from the reef crest, hung with fans and soft coral, and life uses every meter of it. Turtles ascend past divers like commuters on escalators, whitetips nap on notch ledges, batfish and sweetlips loiter under overhangs, and jacks boil bait against the surface with the beach in the background. The famous cavern mouth opens partway along. As a first permit-day dive it recalibrates expectations, and as a last one it is the image people carry home.

The moment you come for: A 600 m wall starting at the beach, constant turtle traffic, the cavern entrance en route

Topography: Vertical wall from ankle depth into roughly 600 m of water

Current: Often the island's calmest marquee site, with gentle along-wall movement.

Entry: Steps from the island's jetty; the wall begins where the sand ends, within meters of shore.

Hazards: Bottomless wall a fin kick from shore; depth discipline from the first minute.

Permits & rules: Permit day required.

Conservation: Jetty-adjacent and permit-capped; surface snorkeling happens under the same park rules.

Nitrox: Worth it here: profiles sit in the range where enriched air meaningfully extends no-stop time (with the training to use it).
