Drop Off

The Drop Off is Sipadan's thesis statement: you wade off a beach, and the bottom is 600 m away. The wall falls sheer from the reef crest, hung with fans and soft coral, and life uses every meter of it. Turtles ascend past divers like commuters on escalators, whitetips nap on notch ledges, batfish and sweetlips loiter under overhangs, and jacks boil bait against the surface with the beach in the background. The famous cavern mouth opens partway along. As a first permit-day dive it recalibrates expectations, and as a last one it is the image people carry home.
