Duppy Waters

Duppy is island English for ghost, and the name suits the site's mood on a quiet morning — pale sand grooves winding between coral spurs, the wall dropping into dim blue, and remarkably few other divers. The sponges are the decoration here, barrels and ropes in funeral purples and oranges, patrolled by angelfish and the occasional cruising eagle ray. Utila's north-side sites live at the mercy of the weather, so shops slot Duppy Waters in when the sea allows; treat an invitation as a good omen and take it, because it shows a wilder, emptier Utila than the harbor-side standards.
