Mi'il Channel is the stage for Yap's winter spectacle. From about December through April the island's resident reef mantas gather here to court, and courtship means trains — a female leading a queue of males that snake through the channel and bank over the cleaning ridge in formation. Divers kneel on bare sand at spots guides have used for decades and let the animals work overhead, wingtips sometimes close enough to feel the pressure wave. Visibility is channel visibility, greenish and honest, which makes the moment a manta materializes out of the haze all the more theatrical.
Le moment pour lequel vous venez: Courtship trains of reef mantas December–April; close cleaning-station passes; mangrove-channel scenery on the boat ride.
Topographie: Sand and rubble channel floor between mangrove-fringed reef walls, with coral-head cleaning stations
Courant: Tidal flow through the channel; guides time drops for the phase that brings ocean water and mantas together.
Entrée: Boats thread the mangrove channel from Colonia to the northwest reef; divers drop near the cleaning stations and settle low.
À savoir avant de plonger
Dangers: Tidal current and reduced visibility on the wrong phase; boat traffic in the narrow channel.
Conservation: Stay low and still at the stations, never block a manta's path or chase, and keep strobes reasonable — the mantas' tolerance is the resource.
