Garden Eel Cove (Manta Night Dive)
The choreography is simple: lights point up, plankton gathers, and reef mantas arrive to harvest it — banking, looping, and barrel-rolling through the beams with mouths agape, often close enough that divers instinctively duck. Some animals here are known individuals with decades of attendance records, each identifiable by belly pattern. Snorkelers float above with lights pointing down, divers kneel on the sand below, and between them the mantas thread a plankton corridor of their own making. Blank nights happen and good operators say so beforehand. When it works, which is most nights, it is the single most reliable big-animal ballet in the Pacific.
Le moment pour lequel vous venez: Barrel-rolling reef mantas centimeters overhead; known individuals returning for decades; a night dive doable early in any logbook.
Topographie: A sandy amphitheater and reef slope where dive lights are pooled to concentrate plankton
Entrée: Boats gather at dusk near the airport coast; divers descend to the sand 'campfire' and kneel in assigned arcs as the lights go on.
À savoir avant de plonger
Dangers: Night-time boat traffic and crowds; surge over the shallow reef on swell nights; task-loading for new night divers.
Conservation: Sit where placed, keep lights up, and never touch a manta — contact damages their mucus coat and the encounter's future.
