Monad Shoal

Monad Shoal is the world's most dependable window on the pelagic thresher shark, an animal that otherwise lives beyond diver depth. At dawn, threshers rise onto this drowned island's plateau to visit cleaning stations, and divers kneel behind rope lines in gray-blue early light as sharks with scythe tails carve slow circles meters away, sometimes joined by devil rays or a passing manta. The ritual is regulated: fixed descent lines, no strobes without permits, no crossing the ropes. Between passes the shoal itself is plain, which nobody minds. You are there for one of diving's great appointments, kept more mornings than not.

Topografie: Plateau of rubble and coral heads rimmed by drop-offs

Stroming: Usually gentle on the plateau; the exposed edges catch more flow.

Instap: Boats leave Malapascua around 5 a.m. to reach the shoal by first light; descents follow fixed lines to the viewing areas.

Gevaren: Repetitive 20 m dawn profiles on consecutive days; monitor no-deco time while watching the blue.

Vergunningen & regels: Per-diver marine protected area fee collected by operators.

Behoud: A locally protected area funded by diver fees; rope-line and lighting rules exist because the sharks abandon harassed stations.
