Depth is the range from the top of the site to its usual maximum; "recommended cert" is the mainstream-agency level operators usually ask for, not a legal rule. Currents and visibility change daily, so treat everything here as planning ranges.

The Aquarium earns its unimaginative name every single day: coral heads on white sand in knee-to-house depths of glassy lagoon water, mobbed by fish that have learned boats mean interest rather than harm. Butterflyfish, snapper, and juvenile Napoleon wrasse crowd visitors; blacktip reef sharks patrol the sand at a polite distance; moray eels tenant the heads. Operators run first-timers, refresher dives, and snorkel drops here, and the site absorbs the traffic in stride. For divers back from the passes with adrenaline to spare, it is also simply a pleasant place to float and let the lagoon demonstrate its colors.

The moment you come for: Tame, dense reef-fish crowds; blacktips over white sand; ideal first-dive and snorkel conditions.

Topography: Coral heads and sand inside the lagoon, shallow and bright

Current: A little pass-driven movement at tide changes; otherwise gentle.

Entry: A few minutes from the Tiputa-side docks, inside the lagoon near the pass mouth; moored entries in calm water.

Know before you splash

Hazards: Boat traffic near the pass; mild current at tide turns.

Conservation: Fish here are habituated, not fed by rule-abiding operators. Keep it that way; no touching, no bread.

"Charted here" species were listed by our editors from the sources on this page. Counts are GBIF occurrence records: observations logged within about 5 km of the charted position since 1990, matched only against the species in our catalogue. They show what has been seen there, not a promise of what you will see.
