Depth is the range from the top of the site to its usual maximum; "recommended cert" is the mainstream-agency level operators usually ask for, not a legal rule. Currents and visibility change daily — treat everything here as planning ranges.

Los Islotes, the sea lion colony at the north tip of Espiritu Santo, delivers the Sea of Cortez's most dependable joy. Several hundred California sea lions live on the islets, and the juveniles treat visiting divers as the day's entertainment - mouthing fins, blowing bubbles in masks, and corkscrewing through groups in nine meters of water. Below the acrobatics, the boulder reef holds king angelfish, moray eels, and drifts of sergeant majors; a small archway cuts through one islet for swim-through theatrics. Bulls patrol territorially in breeding season and deserve their space. Between the accessibility, the shallow profile, and the guaranteed protagonists, it may be Mexico's best first ocean dive.

The moment you come for: Sea lion pups at play, the swim-through arch, an all-levels profile minutes from Espiritu Santo's anchorages

Topography: Boulders, small walls, and sandy patches beneath two guano-capped islets

Know before you splash

Hazards: Territorial bulls in breeding season, boat traffic, surge close to the rocks.

Permits & rules: Protected-area bracelet fee applies, arranged by operators.

Conservation: Part of the Espiritu Santo protected area. In recent years authorities have closed the colony to in-water visitors during the summer breeding months - verify current status before booking.
