Depth is the range from the top of the site to its usual maximum; "recommended cert" is the mainstream-agency level operators usually ask for, not a legal rule. Currents and visibility change daily — treat everything here as planning ranges.

Nine Mile rewards the bay's longest ride with its boldest color. The reef's shallow spine carries huge green tree corals — the emblematic photograph of the site — over gullies and cutbacks where sweepers pulse in the shade. Snapper and fusilier schools braid over the structure, turtles and rays move along the sand line, and in the warm months the launch itself doubles as a wildlife transect: whale sharks, dolphins, and, in winter, humpbacks are all met on the way. Sea state gates access, so a Nine Mile day feels like a small occasion, planned the evening before and confirmed at dawn.

The moment you come for: Giant green tree corals in the shallows; wildlife-rich boat runs

Topography: Dramatic shallow architecture with big coral trees, gullies, and a famous cutback ledge

Current: The longest standard launch in the bay; committed once you go, so conditions are chosen carefully.

Know before you splash

Hazards: Long exposed transit and surge over the shallow spine.

Permits & rules: iSimangaliso park fees apply.

Conservation: The signature tree corals grow at fin height in the shallows — trim up before crossing the spine.
