Black Hills

Black Hills is Utila's fish magnet: a lone coral hill in open water that everything passing must visit. Circling the summit feels like holding a busy intersection — horse-eye jacks wheel in silver carousels, great barracuda hang nose to current, snapper and grunt schools drape the slopes, and spotted eagle rays climb the up-current face. The site's blue-water position gives it the island's best odds, after the boat rides themselves, of a whale shark ghosting past mid-dive. Navigation is simple (it is a hill), but the surrounding bottomlessness keeps the dive honest.

지형: An isolated coral seamount rising from deep water to within about 12 m of the surface.

조류: Exposed to whatever the open sea is doing; some days still, some days a flagpole.

진입: Open-water buoy southeast of the island; descend the line — there is no other reference.

위험 요소: Open-water current and no bottom reference off the mount; keep the summit in sight and ascend on the line.

보존: An aggregation point that concentrates spawning-size fish; the no-take ethic matters doubly here.
