Depth is the range from the top of the site to its usual maximum; "recommended cert" is the mainstream-agency level operators usually ask for, not a legal rule. Currents and visibility change daily — treat everything here as planning ranges.

The Aquarium does exactly what the name promises. A shallow, current-sheltered basin in Mnemba's reef holds fish at densities that feel curated: clouds of anthias and chromis over the coral, snapper schools parting around divers, anemone gardens crowded with skunk and clown anemonefish, porcupinefish loitering under the table corals. Nothing requires depth, effort, or experience, which makes it the training and try-dive site of northern Zanzibar and its single most popular snorkel stop. Serious divers still surface smiling — density is its own spectacle, and night dives here turn up octopus, hunting morays, and Spanish dancers.

The moment you come for: Fishbowl density at snorkel depth; superb for training and night dives

Topography: Shallow coral amphitheater with sand floor and dense fish aggregations

Current: A sheltered coral basin; conditions are pool-like on most days.

Know before you splash

Hazards: Boat congestion at the mooring on peak mornings.

Permits & rules: Conservation-area fee collected per visit through operators.

Conservation: Heavy visitation makes fin discipline the difference between a showcase and a rubble field.
