Mandolin

Mandolin plays the Bunaken wall repertoire with its own phrasing. The reef crest here is unusually animated: snappers, unicornfish, and pyramid butterflyfish crowd the lip where the flat tips over into the drop, and on a moving tide the upper five meters can hold more fish than the entire water column elsewhere. Below, the wall alternates cavelets and soft-coral panels, patrolled by turtles and threaded by sea kraits hunting in the crevices with theatrical indifference to divers. Snorkelers over the crest get nearly as much show as the divers below it. It is often paired with the Lekuan sections on a two-tank morning, and the pairing flatters both.
