Barracuda Lake
Nothing else in the Philippines dives like Barracuda Lake. Enclosed by Coron Island's karst blades, the lake stacks fresh water over salt, and at about 14 m divers push through a shimmering thermocline into water near 38 °C, hot-bath hot, before it cools again below. The walls are sculpted stone, the silt floor swallows fins whole, and shrimp swarm divers' hands at the margins. A solitary barracuda, the namesake, patrols somewhere in the haze and finds you as often as you find it. Fish life is sparse; sensation is the entire point, and it is worth the gear haul over the rocks.
El momento por el que vienes: A 38 °C thermocline you can feel like a wall, cathedral rock formations, the lone resident barracuda
Topografía: Limestone walls, silt cones, and sculpted rock in a brackish crater-like lake
Entrada: Boats moor at Coron Island's cliffs; divers carry gear up and over a short limestone stair to the lake.
Lo que debes saber antes de tirarte al agua
Riesgos: Heat stress in the hot layer, bottomless flour-fine silt, and deceptive depth in clear, dark water.
Permisos y normas: Community-managed entry fee collected at the island.
Conservación: Inside the Coron Island ancestral domain of the Tagbanwa; entry fees support the community and rules deserve strict respect.
