Jackson Reef

Northernmost of the four Tiran reefs, Jackson takes the full push of water entering the strait, and its flanks show the reward: gorgonian fans, dense soft coral, and reef fish stacked into the current lines. The salvage-cut remains of the freighter Lara, wrecked in 1981, still mark the reef crest as a landmark. Most dives drift the southern and eastern faces in moderate flow, but when conditions allow, boats drop experienced groups off the northern point to hang in open blue - in summer, scalloped hammerheads patrol that deep edge. Eagle rays, turtles, and grey reef sharks round out a site that rarely repeats itself two days running.
