Quarter Mile Reef
Quarter Mile is Sodwana's shortest boat ride and, in summer, its most important habitat: pregnant ragged-tooth sharks rest in its shallow gullies between roughly December and April, pausing on their gestation migration up the coast. Divers keep to the edges and watch the heavy-bodied animals hover over the sand, ram-ventilating in the surge. Outside raggie season the reef is a modest but pleasant beginner site — rays under the ledges, turtles passing, octopus in the potholes — dived mostly as a check-out or a second tank. In season, it is treated with nursery-level care.
El momento por el que vienes: Resting pregnant ragged-tooth sharks in summer at snorkelable depths
Topografía: Low sandstone ledges and sandy gullies just north of Jesser Point
Corriente: Closest reef to the launch; surge is the main variable in shallow water.
Lo que debes saber antes de tirarte al agua
Riesgos: Surge over shallow ledges and surf-zone launches.
Permisos y normas: iSimangaliso park fees apply; operators hold the MPA permits.
Conservación: Seasonal protocols protect the resting sharks — no surrounding, no flash barrages, no descending on top of the gullies.
