Quarter Mile is Sodwana's shortest boat ride and, in summer, its most important habitat: pregnant ragged-tooth sharks rest in its shallow gullies between roughly December and April, pausing on their gestation migration up the coast. Divers keep to the edges and watch the heavy-bodied animals hover over the sand, ram-ventilating in the surge. Outside raggie season the reef is a modest but pleasant beginner site — rays under the ledges, turtles passing, octopus in the potholes — dived mostly as a check-out or a second tank. In season, it is treated with nursery-level care.
